Range #3 Trap Safety Rules

These rules are consistent with Amateur Trapshooting Assn. (ATA) rules.
Trap Shooting
- Contestants can only load 1 shell when making ready to shoot during a singles or handicap event.
- Contestants can load 2 shells when making ready to shoot during a doubles event.
- When rotating from station to station contestants must ensure the gun's action is open and no live or empty shells are in the chamber.
- No firearms larger than 12 gauge.
- Allowable shot muzzle velocities are:
- 1290 fps with 1 1/8 oz loads
- 1325 fps with 1 oz loads
- 1350 fps with 7/8 oz loads
TODO: these velocity limits differ from the Events page text (1300 ft/sec, 1 1/8 oz max, no shot larger than 7½). Ask the executive which is current.
Range Safety Officer(s)
Shall be appointed, when more than one member is on the range.
Alcohol or Drugs
Use shall not be permitted on the club property at any time. Anyone found under the influence of alcohol or drugs shall not be permitted on the club property.
Ear and Eye Protection
Shall be worn by all shooters and spectators that are within close proximity to the firing lines.
Range Open/Closed Sign
Is located at the entrance gate to indicate the overall condition of the range(s). The range Closed Sign shall be displayed when the range(s) are not in use. The range sign shall be locked closed when work is being done on Club Property and the Work-in-Sign placed on the main entry gate to ranges. The range Open Sign shall be displayed when any shooting activity is in progress on the range(s).
Range Flags used when Shooting
A Green Flag shall be displayed on the firearm range(s) any time the range is inactive and/or a person is down range of the firing lines. A Red Flag shall be displayed to indicate the range(s) are active and in use. Range #3 Trap House shall be equipped with a Yellow Flag on a short pole. The yellow flag is to be raised by the trap operator to indicate a ceasefire is required. The Range Safety Officer shall call a ceasefire and shall inform the trap operator when it is safe to leave the trap house.
Range Status Sign
The sign located within the clubhouse shall be used to indicate what ranges are open or closed. Trap range #3 is closed when ranges #1, 2, 4 (FIFA) and/or 5 (3D Archery) range(s) are open. Ranges #1, 2, 4 (FIFA) and/or (3D Archery) are closed when the Trap Range #3 is open.
Careless Handling of Firearm or Horseplay
Shall not be permitted on club property. Refer to Bylaw #14 for further information.
Cease Fire
Upon hearing the Range Safety Officer (or another person) call a ceasefire all shooting shall immediately stop, firearms unloaded, lay your firearm down with the muzzle pointing down range and the action(s) are left open. The Range Safety Officer shall inspect all firearms and he/she shall give instructions on how the firearms are to be situated before shooters leave the firing line (left at shooting position, racked or cased). Shooters shall them move back from ceasefire line. No shooting or handling of firearms on the range shall be permitted until the Range Safety Officer declares the range is Active.
Range Commands
All range commands that are given by the Range Safety Officer(s) shall be obeyed.
Safety Tables
The safety tables are located in the club house and at other locations on the ranges as needed.
Note: No live ammunition is allowed on the safety tables.
Ammunition Malfunction
Keep the muzzle pointed down range. Wait 60 seconds before removing the shell or cartridge from the chamber. ACT/PROVE the firearm.
Firearms Requiring Maintenance
Shall be removed from the firing line to a designated safe maintenance area on the direction of the Range Safety Officer. For example, a maintenance area may be set up for cleaning black powder firearms at a shoot. Keep the firearm muzzle pointed in a safest direction at all times and the firearm is kept under control.
Dangerous Area
Do not walk onto shooting range(s), climb berms or backstops when the shooting range(s) are active.
Targets
Use only approved clay birds for targets. Please pick up as many broken/unbroken clay birds as possible when shooting has finished.
Empty Shells
Shall be picked up when a shooter(s) have finished shooting and the Range Safety Officer has indicated the shooting area and the range(s) are safe to do so. Dispose of empty shells in containers provided.
